The 20th Century Movie Musicals – The Corrido Musical Movement and Style
The Corrido is considered as a 20th-century Mexican musical style that tells a story or a tale similar to a ballad. The corridos emerged rapidly during the 20th century at the start of the Mexican Revolution. This style sought to uphold the heroic nature of Mexicans and was performed by small bands that became quite reputable during the Mexican Revolution (Smithsonian Institute 2). Often, the corridos included subtle social and political commentaries that were woven into tales of Great War heroes. When the Mexican immigrants moved north to the United States, the corrido shifted its approach to glorify heroes who stood against racial and political prejudice in the North America. A close look at the Corrido shows that this musical style emerged as a means of social commentary often shifting with changing political and social situations (Summers et al. 25). At one point, the corrido was used to address issues of drug smuggling, cultural clashes, immigration, and love and its performance was necessitated during special occasions like battles, ceremonial gatherings, and marching to work.
It is important to highlight that the corrido would later become synonymous with country music and Agro country as the Mexican immigrants lived alongside Americans (Limon 56). This musical style and movement enabled Latino-Americans to preserve their culture, to contest racial prejudices, and to acknowledge their cultural identity and heritage.

Most importantly, the corridos acted as a unique social and cultural expression and played a central role in the oral history of Latinos and Mexicans. Although key aspects of the corrido change depending on time and events, the underpinning concepts remain intact. Hence, the corrido musical style and genre surpassed time and space by transforming past events into present consciousness (Sanchez 32). Hence, this analysis reveals that the corrido is a unique socio-cultural identity and altogether acts as a unique module through which Mexicans expressed their tradition and glorified the heroes during changing political and social times.
