1. The orderly seems to be singing a love song to his beloved one, threatening to end his life if his desired one did not appreciate his affection. The orderly says that “I’ll go see a girl in purple, Kiss this sad world toodle-oo” (Vonnegut np). Vonnegut includes the song in the narrative, particularly at the beginning, to introduce the reader to the kind of society he intends to portray, one that held less value for human life “I’ll go see a girl in purple… Let some sweet baby have my place” (Vonnegut np)
2. The garden mural is a representation of Wehling’s society as it features its characters: “Men and women in white, doctors and nurses, turned the soil, planted seedlings, sprayed bugs, spread fertilizer” (Vonnegut np). The doctor in the mural represents Dr. Hitz who is responsible for societies health and also a supporter of the oppressive birth control law (planting seedlings and spraying bugs). Also, “Men and women in purple uniforms pulled up weeds, cut down plants that were old and sickly, raked leaves, carried refuse to trash-burners” (Vonnegut np) is a representation of servicewomen such as Leora Duncan who is responsible for performing murders.
3. The painter dislikes the mural. He is realistic and feels the art a wrong representation of the life. The mural portrays life as a perfectly planted garden, which is contrary to the painter’s belief “…not even in medieval Holland nor old Japan–had a garden been more formal” (Vonnegut np).

Despite the perfection displayed by the drawing, the painter views the world as imperfect and compares it to the foul drop cloth.
4. The painter uses the comparison of Duncan’s dress as a metaphor to portray her as one who executes others. The description of the dress as the biblical “the color of grapes on the Judgment Day” perfectly fits the role the servicewoman plays in the society, of killing those found unfit to continue living.
5. The symbol for the Bureau of Termination is that of an eagle hovering on a turnstile, portraying the image of an eagle on the watch for its next prey, a perfect representation of the Bureau. The seal is suitable to the Bureau. In the story, the Bureau acts as the governments watch-dog responsible for identifying and killing individuals they deem unfit for the society.6. Vonnegut intentionally makes Service Women have moustaches in the story to mock them and the role they play in the society. Despite their feminine gender, he intentionally creates them with male structures to demonstrate that the duties they perform are unlikely of women in the society and that the responsibility carried out by men. Vonnegut thus depicts a society with misplaced gender roles
7. The mural is the allusion in the story. The painting is utilized to ironically portray the imperfect society as perfect, assisting readers to see the satire the author intends to develop.
8. The narrative is an instance of dystopian literature. The setting of the story contradicts the writer’s ethos. Despite the portrayal of the society as a perfect one with “… no prisons, no slums, no insane asylums, no cripples, no poverty, no wars” (Vonnegut np), there is much suffering in the civilization. Only those in government positions like Dr. Hitz and Duncan seem to enjoy while ordinary folks like the painter and Mr. Wehling appear to be suffering.
9. The story issues are warning to those in power against trying to design the society in a manner they deem perfect. Even though the design might appear to be favorable for the existence of the community, it may reduce the members of the society, similar to the situation in the story. Yes, the case is a universal truth. Already, some countries have placed regulations limiting birth rates among their citizens, for instance, America.
