A Streetcar Named Desire
In the play titled “A streetcar named desire,” men are portrayed to be aggressive and dominant than women. To prove my thesis, I will show how men carry themselves, how they use intimidation and how they treat women in an undesired way to show their masculinity and dominance.
Stanley is the main character that achieves to portray manhood in this play through his aggressiveness to Stella and Blanche. Stanley’s dominance, power and aggressiveness are expressed by his violence towards women and his intense actions “every man is a king! And I am the king around here, so don’t forget it.” By comparing himself to a king Stanley aim at showing that men are powerful and should be respected thus the play achieves to show how men are powerful than women. Also, his bright, lucid clothes add up to his power “Stanley, wear colored shirts, solid blues, a purple, a red-and-white-check” which is different from Blanche white clothing. Also, this is the reason the author suggests that Stanley is a “richly feathered bird among hens” and a “gaudy seed-bearer” (Fox, p.23).
The other instance where Stanley achieves to portray that men are more powerful and aggressive than women is when Stanley tells Blanche about Stella’s pregnancy “Stella going to have a baby? I didn’t know she was going to have a baby!” This statement aims at hurting Blanche at to show that he can sire a baby. By stressing much about Stanley’s body, the author achieves to express Stanley’s power.

In several cases, Stanley strips his shirt off “He starts to remove his shirt” such instances intend to show the aggressiveness and difference between a man and a woman (Fox, p.24). Also, a man is portrayed to be aggressive by Stanley’s action of investigating Blanche’s past and bringing it to the limelight and by doing so he achieves to show that he is the man of the house since no one can question him about his action.
In conclusion from the quote mentioned above, it’s clear that is a character that is ready to act how he wishes to portray his power, manhood, aggressive and his presence as the man of the house. On the other hand, women are portrayed to be submissive thus it intends to show that they are under men actions.
