The justice system is a factor that is substantially represented in chapter five. This is a chapter that explores the aftermath of the rape situation on Geraldine, but there is little progress by the police on the matter and children such as Joe are finding more evidence than the police. The police play a critical role in the society. They are essential elements of the social order that maintain law and order, conduct investigations and provide evidence to courts to ensure that justice is served. However, in such a society where women are discriminated upon, such a case involving rape is given little consideration and considered a non-issue despite the great physical and emotional problems it has caused the victim (Erdrich, 87).
Proper investigation is considered a fair investigation. Investigations by law enforcement agents are aspects a civilized society that leads to justice. It is, therefore, the duty of police officers to ensure bring the truth about situations to light. Such investigations are always of great importance to criminal cases because of the details they provide about circumstances. Investigations offer court systems better explanations of how events of a case prevailed and led to the development of a fair judgment (Proper Investigation Is Fare Judgment, 2018).
Lack of proper investigation is a representation of a corrupt system which is reflective of a corrupt society. It is a great hindrance to the search for the truth and can result in significant negative implications to the society such as the roaming free of a sex offender and the continuation of criminal activities.

However, it is the role of the police and the entire justice system to ensure that the operation of the collection of information through investigations and the provision of justice is carried out most professional and ethical mannerly possible.
