Problems with Democracy in the United States
Democracy establishes a system of government where the supreme authority belongs to the public and may exercise it directly or via their elected leaders under a credible electoral system. The United States is the first nation in the modern history to embrace a democratic constitution. Also, the country promotes democracy in other countries across the world that helps to establish a stable, secure, and a successful global ground where the United States may advance its own interests. Democratically governed countries are more probable to secure the harmony, expand open markets, deter aggression, promote economic growth, combat international crime and terrorism, protect American citizens, uphold workers and human rights, avoid refugee flows and humanitarian crises, protect human health, and improve the global environment. (Miller and Quealy n.p). Though America is a strong democracy in the world, there are problems with democracy in the United States. The problems include but not limited to
Gerrymandering and closed primaries
Money politics and too many voters per congressional district
Low-information voters and media bias
People lack political power or an easy way to mobilize
Difficult to communicate with elected representatives
Difficult register and vote
Gerrymandering refers to the manipulation of borders so as to favor one class or party. Over twenty years now, the United States Congress has increasingly become polarized.

The total number of positions offered every state is overseen by the Congress, proportionally depending on the latest tally every ten years. Typically, the political party controlling the state assembly will draw boundary advantageous to themselves, and authorize them by a humble majority. So even when a given populace favors one political party in an entire state registration, by sketching the bounders in the right manner, you could provide the other political party the advantage in Congress (Putorti n.p). When this is combined with sealed primaries, which restrict to solitary the associates of a single party, it is processed for crippling polarity. The solution is to have ranked choice voting or open primaries, in performance with common-sense and non-partisan district borders that keep individuals with common necessities together. Therefore, the gerrymandering and closed primaries is indeed a problem with democracy in the United States.
Money politics and too many voters per congressional district is another problem. Usually, money is a substitution for votes. It is an alternative for votes since most Americans are not informed and engaged. The adverts are expensive and thus, a candidate must raise millions of dollars. Main bundlers and donors get disproportionate power because that cash is desired to be re-elected. The cries of corruption often go with this fact. Having too many Congressional districts also calls for middlemen hence a problem to democracy.
Low-information voters and media bias can easily lead people in the wrong direction. Since money matters in politics and the politicians use the funds to sponsor biased messaging, many people may only get that biased information as it is in the media where they spend their time instead of informing themselves. Also, the media is partial towards exaggeration over substance. Therefore, these may influence people’s voting pattern hence a problem in a democracy.
People lack political power or an easy way to mobilize and this gives some people influence on whoever is to be elected. It is really difficult to organize other persons. Due to this difficulty, embedded interests have an intrinsic advantage (Putorti n.p). Difficult to communicate with the elected representative is another problem as the leaders don’t get responses and preferences from their constituents they represent. Difficult register and vote is another problem in the United States democracy as people may queue for a long time before they can cast their vote in a presidential election. This may discourage many people and perhaps fail to show up. Therefore, to encourage democratic election where all people can easily vote, the electronic voting needs to be introduced and secured. Therefore, there are issues that pose problems for democracy in the United States.
