Harassment/ Aggression
During my high school years, I happened to witness a number of bullying acts. During the games time, my friends and I decided to take a walk around the basketball pitch. Two of my friends were of African origin and the rest were Latinos. As we approached the basketball pitch, we could see three other male students moving towards our direction. As we got closer, one of them started to make funny sounds and jumping while pointing at us. The other two students laughed loudly and to make it worse, the same student started shouting “I need some bananas” while making funny sounds and jumping. The situation got tensed as I could see my friends getting angry.
This harassment can be regarded as verbal-active-direct as the student who was harassing my friends used derogatory terms that indicate racism. The use of a derogatory term is aimed at making one feel inferior before the bully. I believe the cause of his aggression is a personal cause that is also linked to mindset. The aggressor was of Caucasian origin and thus has the mentality of Whiteman superiority and Black inferiority. Based on the acts of the aggressor, he had an inflated self-esteem that made him believe that him being of the White race he is better than the Blacks. In addition, the aggressor was trying to showcase to his peers that he is tough so that he can gain recognition. When I noticed the situation was getting tensed, I did approach the aggressor and informed him to stop it.

At first, he was reluctant and pushed him and he almost fell. I took the initiative of reporting the matter to the school administration and the student was suspended for two weeks.
