Analysis of the Movie Crash
The movie Crash, is a fascinating film that offers a proper sociological perspective. Diversity in the world evidently brought a distinctive crash that enabled the differences to widen the gap. A clear indication of discrimination existence in our today life is clearly portrayed in the film. Crash is located in the suburbs that are diverse in Los Angeles. It revolves around individuals living in the suburbs who are linked together by racial discrimination events. The individuals each represent a specific race commonly stereotyped and judged by society. Their lives are intertwined in the evident of prejudices of race and their decision on how to perceive the events. However, the issues of race and gender reflected in the movie help to form the main theme in the film and also the search for some sort of a human connection. This paper seeks to look at the theme based on sociological perspectives such as feminism through examination of the way the movie handles both of the issues.
Crash shows the different lives of different individuals in varying social classes that are the upper middle, middle and the lower class. It starts off showing two individuals with a black skin color walking via a neighborhood which I rate as a middle-class white people residence. One of the individuals is a thug from a lower class descent who believes that every white person is up against him. Sandra Bullock and Brendan Fraser, a couple in the middle age class, walk in their direction and on meeting them the white female (Sandra) holds onto her husband in a much tighter grip.

The character played by Ludacris notices her movement and dwells into it saying that there was no need for her to feel threatened by the black guys and continues suggesting that they did not give an intimidating look thereby she should not be frightened. However, the two men draw out their weapons contradicting his defense towards them. The two black males illustrate numerous sociological perspectives as they start illustrating just how the notion of conflict can develop key situations since they steal the couple’s vehicle. By judging the social interaction of the two, it is clear that they lack necessary resources that cause them to participate in the particular deviant behavior.
Formal sociological control has an immense role in the plot of the story. The actor Cheadle has an experience formal social control when authoritarian leaders give him a deal if he does what is asked of him. Cheadle has a brother who lives in deviant acts of stealing cars he has also being charged before for grand larceny and could easily go to prison if he does not tread carefully. The leaders ask Cheadle to convict a white male who had killed a black man or otherwise his brother would be convicted. At the same time, his mother is struggling with a problem of drug addiction. Numerous negative impacts come along with divorce and parenthood; sociologists claim that large numbers will suffer, but others can survive the situation. The child is affected in the sense that they are likely to not attend tertiary education, abuse drugs and many are afraid intimacy.
Gender and race are constructs by the society and are not physical attributes. Some scene shows just how race categories are developed and employed by people. The categories though do not tell as much of a person’s actual culture or their ethnical heritage. For instance, the film shows the Los Angeles district attorney trying hard to protect his public figure among voters of black skin color through finding an African American who he can publicly reward, he locates and considers a fire-fighter who is black who had done a heroic action not too long ago. The district attorney in a discussion hears someone say that the fire-fighter is Iraqi in an actual sense, he agrees and comments that the fire-fighter does look like an Iraqi. Racial categorization is also seen where a detective deems his lover as a Mexican causing her to retract and say her mother is from El Salvador and her father is from Puerto Rico.
Gender roles in the traditional aspect become portrayed in the movie crash showing how gender roles can reduce the possibility of creating a link between individuals. The roles of the male gender traditionally are to provide and to be the protector of the household. The film casts a director by the name Cameron, in one scene their vehicle is stopped by the police who is very racist. The officer John Ryan checks both Cameron and his wife for weapons. Cameron’s wife, however, is rather antagonistic towards the officer and refuses to comply. Cameron does not respond to the officer’s act of frisking his wife in a rather sexual suggestive way. His wife feels that Cameron did not play his role of a protector. She continues to accuse him of allowing her to suffer embarrassment more so for their situation of being black. A rift emerges between Cameron and his wife as she is hurt since her husband did not protect her. Cameron in his a director role he agrees to make a scene that is rather racially stereotypical. His decision can be seen as a fear of losing his job thereby not being able to act in his role of a protector.
Crash directs that we should analyze the differences between female characteristics such as intuition, non-aggression and submissiveness and male characteristics such as aggression and decisiveness. There is a shop owner a Persian American who purchases a hand-gun to protect his family of a wife and a daughter named Dorri. Dorri does not like the idea of the gun thereby she buys an ammunition box labeled blanks for the new gun. The father has a limited understanding of the English language. The shop belonging to the Persian American is damaged and vandalized thereby affecting negatively his means of providing for the family. He goes after a locksmith who he blames for the situation demanding compensation in cash. The locksmith young daughter steps in front of the gun and it goes off pointed towards her but she is unharmed. It is an averted situation as the gun had fake bullets gotten by Dorri. Dorri’s behavior shows decisiveness and action also intuition and lack of aggression. This shows that individuals should use their traits to help their situations and not their genders.
The movie Crash is an insightful movie as it shows what the media and persons like to label theory can do to the process of thinking of some people. Gender and race are linked with one’s unique behavior of developing prejudice assumptions. I do agree with the fact appearance has something to do with the perceptions of people, but it lacks the information about an individual.
