Cherishing a Legacy: Voluntary at Historic Site
People volunteer for many reasons, some do it to make a difference in other people’s lives, and some may do it to support an organization or cause. But for Mr. XYZ, a senior citizen, volunteering is a passion because of his love for history. A 1971 alumnus of our university, XYZ completed his bachelor’s degree in comprehensive social science and a master’s degree in political science from the University of ABC. Although a political science graduate, he now volunteers at the local historic site. The historic site is a picturesque old castle.
While in graduate school, XYZ developed an interest in history and teaching about the subject. “I entered to become a teacher. I never did, but that’s beside the point. In fact, about half the graduates did not go into teaching,” he said. “But the ‘50s and ‘60s had a very severe shortage of teachers. And so basically, that was, from my perspective, an excellent job to strive for.” Apart from reminiscing about the knowledge aspect of graduate school, XYZ has one lingering memory regarding his graduate school mentor. “My advisor at least for the first semester and we stayed friends for the entire time and even after I left graduate school was Mr. ***. That name doesn’t make any sense,” XYZ recalls.
With the voluntary engagement at the historic site, XYZ enjoys teaching visitors about the construction and background of the castle. His favorite part of the talk is the world tour that the family who resided in the house took in 1924 and 1925.

As a political science graduate, XYZ did not study the history of the affluent society during the pre Second World War. “I’m a military historian,” he said. The historic site will celebrate its anniversary in August 2018. XYZ is part of the planning committee that has been organizing the event. He is confident the committee will execute the plans for the celebrations with ease. The primary goals of the ceremony are to honor the continuing support to the castle’s foundation by the family and for the community to see the upper class of the pre-World War Two era, XYZ said.
Visiting the castle according to XYZ is an inspirational, educational process that benefits the student community. The owner of the castle was a woman born in the Gilded Age in 1880. With her two siblings, they carried on the traditions their father had established. Their father rose from comparative obscurity to a celebrated magnate. The historic site offers an opportunity for the community to discover a lifestyle that no longer exists. A style of living consisting of inherited wealth, parties, vacations and hardworking people who contributed to the community.
