Article Summary
The article by Logan (2010), Personal characteristics, sexual behaviors, and male sex work a quantitative approach explores male sex workers and their relation to sexuality, gender, and masculinity. Through qualitative data analysis and quantitative analysis of United States online male escorts, he delves into the conclusion that male prostitutes serve a diversified group that consists of gays, their partners, and heterosexuals. Personal characteristics and sexual behaviors of the escorts form the basis to test masculinity and gender theories. In the study Logan(2010), concluded that male escorts who expressed more masculine characteristics and behavior, charged higher fees compared to those who expressed minimal male behaviors; hegemonic masculinity. As such, the more muscular an escort is, the higher the fees he charges. The most advertised sexual behaviors include the bottom, top, no attitude, safe bottom, safe top, versatile, versatile top, versatile bottom, and safer sex. The study shows that men who take up the dominant sexual behaviors tend to charge higher prices than their counterparts do. This is consistent with the quasi-heteronormativity, prevalent in gay practices (Logan, 2010).
Moreover, the theory of intersectionality was confirmed with the results indicating that race was a strong determinant on the prices charged by the male escorts. For example, black male escorts who come across as very masculine are highly demanded and hence premium prices.

In addition, those who are into sexual dominance stereotyping have a high premium market. They also make additional income charging penalties for those who do not abide during the dominance exercise. Although early studies indicated male escorts were common in gay populated areas, recent studies show that most identify as heterosexuals and hence evenly distributed in the general population. The study also shows that the market for male escorts has shifted from bars and newspapers to the internet (Logan, 2010).
