Asthma
Ida Mae who is an African American girl aged 11 years old may have obtained asthma when she was at the age of 4 years due to various factors. Some of the factors that may have led are a stuffy environment that she lived in, frigid climates, a genetic inheritance from the parents or any other sibling, certain medications such as aspirin and also common cold among many other respiratory infections. The nurse should do a reassessment on the family history to check on the lineage whether there is anyone who might have asthma and have a relation with the current condition of Ida.
Clinical assessment of the physical appearance of the patient will tell the nurse on how severe her asthma condition is. For example, the difficulty in talking and also the heart rate and respiratory rate will give a guideline for the asthma condition and severity of Ida (Clark, 2015). The school nurse should consider Ida Mae a reliable historian and reference to the African American families who have asthma in the family lineage.
Studies have shown that most African American families are affected by asthma, and they end up having severe asthma and cases of their offspring inheriting the disease are higher compared to the European families (McKinney, James, Murray, Nelson, & Ashwill, 2017). According to a research done by the Federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, most of the people who get infected with asthma are the black children compared to the white children.
Wait! Asthma paper is just an example!
Furthermore, the black kids are ten times likely to die of asthma compared to the white kids.
The most common drug prescribed to children who have asthma is the albuterol, not all African American are responsive to the drug while most of the white children are highly responsive to the drug. The nurse despite having the background history of Ida, the nurse should also reassess on hoe the inhaler is responding to the asthma condition on Ida. If the inhaler is not a useful drug, then Ida will always feel the inhaler empty and not be helping her. The nurse should find an alternative medicine to be used in the inhaler to manage and also prevent asthma attacks for Ida.
