The education sector is currently improving due to various inventions such as the grading software that is being incorporated in teaching systems. However, the authenticity of this grading software is still questioned by many professional individuals in the academic field. For example, the automated essay scoring software cannot be considered intelligent at grading. This is because the machine relies on human examples in order to be able to grade. Therefore, this grading software can be termed as efficient but not effective. For example, the scoring is based on the length of the sentences, presence of keywords and construction of the sentences (Laudon & Laudon, n.d). This means the scoring could be misleading because the content of the information does not matter. Alternatively, the prime advantage of human graders is that they are capable of judging the essay themselves to know when the information in the essay is correct regardless of the sentence construction unlike software that mainly focuses on sentence construction without an emphasis on the essay`s interpretation.

Automated essay scoring software cannot be considered intelligent at grading. This is due to the fact that the machine relies on human examples in order to be able to grade. The machine is not capable of differentiating facts from fiction, and instead, it grades essays with regards to keywords, the length of sentences and construction of paragraphs.

The system is unable to recognize if the information contained in the paragraph or sentence is correct or not. This means as the student can skillfully construct long untrue sentences with complex vocabulary or keywords and still score very high in the grading compared to another who had the correct information but used shorthand (Laudon & Laudon, n.d).

Consequently, the automated essay grading can be termed as efficient but not effective. This is due to the fact that the grading can be used to score a higher number of essays at a lesser time compared to a human being and return the essay to students for correction within a short period. However, the scoring is based on the length of the sentences, presence of keywords and construction of the sentences. This means the scoring could be misleading as the content of the information does not matter. The scoring can, therefore, at times, score high for students even though they have failed in the argument. Additionally, the students can score low in an essay just because they use shorthand regardless of the content of the essay. It is ineffective in the sense that its grading does not recognize the correctness of the essay content but scores based on the structure of the essay. This means the feedback it gives to the student could be misleading and incorrect (Laudon & Laudon, n.d).

Besides, some of the main benefits of the system are that the students are able to get immediate feedback on their essays giving them a chance to act on them directly. The other advantage is that it saves time as it can grade thousands of essays compared to human graders or instructors. The EAS is less costly because of its capability of grading thousands of essays at the same time cheaply, and it can also beat the human capability. This is because humans are also very expensive. According to the developer, the software is believed to be more accurate. One of the major drawbacks of the software is its inability to distinguish between the facts and the fiction. The approach of the scoring by grading on the structure of the sentences means it does not consider the content to be important. This means that, with time, the quality of education will go down as the students will concentrate on beating the machine’s intelligence rather than putting the relevant information on the essays (Laudon & Laudon, n.d).

Before deciding to use the AES, organizations should consider how the quality of education in their institutions will be affected by the software method of grading. It is also important to consider the cost of maintenance and the risk of the software becoming obsolete. Another important factor to consider is the training required by the institutions and the users of the software (Laudon & Laudon, n.d)

Contrarily, I would be suspicious of low grade done by AES software because according to analysts, this machines does not put importance on the content of the essay rather it marks the length of paragraphs and construction of paragraphs. This means even if my content is correct, but I have not constructed my sentences or used the keywords according to the samples fed into the system, the grading will consider my essay to be of low grading. This is different when it is done by human graders as they are capable of judging by themselves to know when the information in the essay is correct regardless of the sentence construction (Laudon & Laudon, n.d).
