An article of Confederation was the first constitution approved by the United States after independence from Britain. The article was adopted on November 15, 1777, but ratification took place after four years. There were a lot of conflicts and arguments among the federal and the governments’ states since some were for and others against its implementation (Structure of government). It allowed the colonial states to group during wars thus building a centralized government to work with the thirteen states. In my book review, I will discuss the pros and cons of articles of confederation.

There are various advantages of the articles of confederation which is its ability to offer the first chance to experience independence and unity. Even though the colonies had come together to fight against British for independence, United Sates were never united. Articles of confederation turn out to be the first to bring everyone together under a canopy of unity. Secondly, it gave the colonies an opportunity to go global. Articles of Confederation brought about a centralized government which helped colonies to be known worldwide and to be taken seriously. It also allowed colonists to experience free movement. There was no need to carry papers when traveling around the United States because the colonist was declared Americans thanks to articles of confederation thus they were free to go whichever state they so wish to.

Although the constitution established borders, it did not restrain people their freedom of movement. Articles of confederation encouraged trade. Articles of Confederation established confederacy of trade, financial opportunities, and states internally. Rather than adopting international search for goods and services, the constitution advocated for exclusive work relationship that would result in mutual benefit to everyone from the transaction.
As the United States began to grow, the primary disadvantages of articles of association became visible. It took a longer time to be implemented. Articles of association were adopted in 1777, but full ratification took place in 1791. It was a process which required everyone to get involved for it to be implemented. Still, the national government could not impose laws on the state which also was a major factor why it took time before it was implemented. It also placed value on slaves. The southern states imposed a tax on the whites while northern states levied a tax on everyone except the Native Americans (A new constitution). A compromise was reached: since the slaves were a property, their value was taxed by the new government structures.
The pros and cons of articles of confederation have shaped the United States to a continent which is today. It was an open system which encouraged dialogue and foster state to state relationship which provided a cornerstone which is referred to the constitution (Gerstenberg, 177).Work cited
