BF Skinner’s Baby Box
What would be the advantages and disadvantages of this “baby box”?
One of the advantages of the box is that it provides room for controlled experiments. Also, according to the article by Deborah Skinner Buzan (2004), who is Skinner’s daughter, she did not experience any developmental issues as most people posited but rather grew up healthy and led a fulfilling life. The mother also had an easy time taking care of the infant (Buzan, 2004). Therefore, it can be perceived that the box does not interfere with the growth of an individual from a child to an adult. The article by Sokol (2018), which highlights New Jersey as one of the states in the U.S. which has benefited from using baby boxes, explains that the baby boxes have resulted in the reduction of infant mortality rates, through the creating of a safe environment when the babies sleep. The disadvantage of the box would be that it limits the development of the bond between a child and its mother which is essential for an infant’s growth.
Would you raise a baby using this? Why or why not?
From an individual perspective, I would raise a child using the box as per the associated safety especially when the baby is sleeping. The box is perceived to create a healthy environment whereby the baby sleeps comfortably and is protected from being exposed to toxic substances. Also, as per the testimonial by Deborah Skinner (2004), she had a healthy lifestyle, cried only when injured and did not acquire cold symptoms until she was six years old.
Wait! BF Skinner’s Baby Box paper is just an example!
This illustrates that the box might be beneficial in terms of the health and development of an infant.
Based on the baby box, what modifications might you propose for other baby apparatuses—high chairs, playpens, etc.?
The modification of some of the baby equipment might be effective concerning their development. For example, using high chairs or chairs that are of the same length as other chairs at the dinner table, enables the child to be part of the family dinner with the rest. This facilitates the child’s familiarization with the social environment. Changing the toys in the playpen would also prevent a child from being bored.
Do you think it is ethical to raise a child in a baby box? Why or why not?
From an individual perspective, it would be ethical to raise an infant in a box especially in situations that the parents find themselves overwhelmed by other responsibilities. However, there should be a balance between raising the child in a box and human interaction to ensure that the bond between the child and the parents including others individuals is not affected.
