The poem begins with a sad tone of someone who is gravely ill with cancer. The first stanza depicts a hopeless person who is full of regret as he lies on a hospital bed. The poem goes on to show the concern of a nurse called Diana who is initially viewed in a negative light by the patient. This is dislike is emphasized right from the poem’s title, “Despicable Diana. “The patient is sarcastic in his replies to the nurse’s good intentioned inquiries. This does not, however, dishearten Diana as she goes about her duties of ensuring his well-being.
Although she is mindful of the pain that the patient goes through, she is keen to see the drugs administered. Some don’t cause more harm to his recovery. As a result of this, the patient considers her a sadist, calling her a “death monger.” However, the patient reluctantly follows her directives, the results of which eventually turn out positive. He not only makes a full recovery, but he also retains his sense of humor to the extent of joking about smoking, the cause of his illness.
His perception of her changes radically at the end when he suggests that she is his ultimate guardian angel. According to him, she is the sole reason as to why he enjoys an extra fifty years after surviving a battle with cancer. In the end, he is left with nostalgic feelings of the nurse as though he was greatly indebted to him. He now fully understands that she was as caring as anyone he had ever met during his lifetime.

Caring in nursing
Care refers to the art of showing compassion and concern for other people’s needs. It involves sacrificing one’s own time and energy for the benefit of others. More often than not, a mother’s love for her child is considered the single ultimate form of care in the world today. This is because of the limits to which she would go to ascertain her child’s well-being. Care is manifested in several different forms and is particularly mostly directed to the vulnerable members of society. This paper aims to look at the role of this virtue in the nursing profession.
Patients, the world over, are susceptible to further harm or injury as a result of their poor health conditions. For this reason, more than most people, they require constant care and attention. This service is provided by nurses who play an important role in the path to recovery of any patient. The importance of care in the nursing cannot, therefore, be downplayed, neither can it be overstated. Nurses play a vital role in ensuring the proper drug dosage by patients. Not only do they ensure that the right amount of dosage is administered, but they also ascertain their timely administration. Nurses portray a kind of care that is reminiscent of a mother’s love whenthey ensure that patients under their care receive appropriate diets to quicken their recovery. (Behrens & Langer, 2016)
Some patients whose conditions are critical require round-the-clock monitoring which is a very demanding job. Only a caring nurse will be able to provide the necessary care for such patients. For those patients under intensive care, nurses ensure that the machines run smoothly thereby aid in preventing fatalities (Korhonen, Nordman & Eriksson, 2015). Some tasks to be done under such circumstances may be considered by many as demeaning, such as cleaning the patients or getting rid of their waste. Care is the fuel for the endurance of such tasks. Care is indeed a vital and inalienable part of nursing. Without care, the profession may as well be as good as dead.

On his deathbed, he seldom could remember, something he actually did right.
Ever since ten years ago last September, has always been about the light.
His final year and tis already December, he can’t say he put up a good fight.
Was the pillow to your liking? Diana interrupts. Twas perfect, almost slept for good.
Nice. Coz your first chemo session’s quite abrupt. Really? Never been in a better mood.
Don’t worry; it will reclaim every cell cancer corrupts. The table is set, I am death’s food.
Take these pills; they’ll very ease your pain. Haven’t you something stronger?
You realize you are only as sick as you feign. She’s keen to see me hurt longer.
Help me pull you back out from the abysmal drain. Says masquerading death-monger.
So how’d it go? You sure seem much brighter. And immortal too. Calls for a puff.
Sure. If you’d prefer hell’s flames as your lighter. Never, the devil’s roll must be tough.
You took them already, one damn lucky fighter. Couldn’t without you, sure enough.
On his deathbed, he seldom could remember, another face with a clearer light.
Ever since fifty years ago that September, he hadn’t met a heart so bright.
And checking to the last day of my calendar, only Diana can make me right.
