Problems are defined differently, the most straightforward being, that it is the difference between what is real and what one expects. Problem- solving is, therefore, the act of bridging this gap changing an expectation into a reality.
Getting a solution for Betty Smith’s problem involves a process that requires a sober mind as one has to go through various systematic steps (Hamalainen, De Wever, Nissinen & Cincinnato 2017). The trick here is to come up with a decision that is neutral to Betty, female and male employee so that the verdict does not favor one side. The first step is the identification and analysis of the problem. Betty has presented her case, and the nurse manager should go straight to analyzing her evidence to see if it is worth acting on which I believe it is.
Second is to collect and analyze the information by going back to the promotion and training policies to see if they are against women (Savery 2015). The manager would also need to have a forum with a number of the employees that Betty purports to have collected their signatures to get their views. It gives the manager an opportunity to confirm whether Betty’s current behavior informs her petition.
The process is, however, is crucial because one does not need to rely only on her prejudged opinions as at times the manager may also be wrong leading to wrong actions. The result of the analysis should determine the next move (Thomton & Dumke 2005).

In this case, however, Betty’s petition comes at the right time when personnel evaluation that comes with the pay rise or promotion is just at the corner. I would recommend that every person goes through the assessment equally to determine the rationale behind the claim. It would be a perfect opportunity to see if the employees that signed the petition are worthy of promotions and training.
