Change Strategies
The best strategies in Sam’s situation are empirical-rational and the normative -reeducative strategy. Sam little’s story gives an insight of a rational being who would be very prepared to follow his self-interest if at all he would be helped to understand it. It is evident from the fact that he has agreed and focused on using the prescribed diet and ensuring he keeps his weight at a desirable level.
One would implement this strategy by reasoning with Sam, explaining to him the importance of using the insulin pump and monitoring his blood glucose according to the schedule. Sam seems to understand that he needs this treatment excepts some few aspects of it. It would be easy to bring him to back to track by taking time and reasoning with him explaining in details the nature of his problem and why it is very imperative that he uses all prescribed tools and follow procedures (Nickols,2016).
Normative- reeducative strategy relies on the fact that an individual being a social being will tend to follow his values and norms or those of the society. Cultural norms and values are never static (Salam & Alghamdi, 2016). They do change, and if one can influence Sam’s cultural norms and values by trying to redefine and reinterpret them, then he is most likely to change. Sam, as stated doesn’t want to be pressured into doing what he does not like. Peaceful means are the only solution for a resistance person (Blais, Hayes, Kozier, & Erb, 2015).

Implementing these strategies would require that I work very closely with Sam’s wife and close family in identifying the values that prevent him from using his insulin pump and persuading him to change his perception.
