Sediment is one of the common problems that affect different watersheds. Sediment results from the weathering and erosion of soil and rocks. The main sources of sediment are eroding shorelines and coasts also referred to as the tidal sediment sources, and the eroding river banks and land also referred to as the watershed sediment sources.
Too much sediment is a very critical source of any watershed’s poor health. Too much of sediment particles on water makes it muddy and cloudy. Cloudy water inhibits the penetration of sunlight from reaching the plants that grow on the bottom of the watershed. Without ample sunlight, underwater plants such as grasses die, consequently affecting the young fish as well as shellfish that use them for shelter and spawning. Too much sediment can also be detrimental not only to the watershed but also the people that depend on it. Sediment easily bind with nutrients and chemicals and spread through the watershed. Shellfish and fish which feed or inhabit close to the contaminated sediment can easily contaminate themselves, leading to potential fish consumption advisories close to the watershed region. Too much sediment also has the potential of smothering bottom-dwelling organisms such as oysters. Finally, excessive sediment can clog channels, hence affect recreational and commercial shipping activities.
To succeed in fighting off the sediment problem, we all must do our part actively. The human actions can have a great impact on watersheds. Therefore, changes have to start from our end and trickle down to the rivers and other water bodies.
