Social Media addiction among Teenagers
Social media is gaining popularity with each dawn to become part of teenager’s everyday life. Teenagers are the heaviest users of social networking media sites such as Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, Twitter, and Snapchat. The advent of new technology and easy internet access has instigated progress in the smart gadgets industry where more advanced communication devices have been developed. The majority of teenagers have smart phones within their reach and can therefore comfortably interact with their peers anywhere any time. Despite playing a vital role in broadening social connections, social media has several risks which cannot be ignored. Most teenagers lack self-regulation of their online activities and therefore end up being addicts of social media usage.
Addiction to social media has several health and mental consequences. This has become an escalating issue that needs to be addressed in the modern society. Social media obsession prompts teenagers to spend most of their time on social media sites. Researchers claim that addiction leads to mental health problems such as reduced self-esteem, anxiety and even instances of depression (O’Keeffe, Gwenn, and Kathleen, 803). Social media has established control over teenagers where failure to access social media sites leads to anxiety. However, the comparison between the social media users lowers self-confidence where an individual may feel inferior amongst their peers.

Social media addiction has severe physical impairments such as heart disease and obesity. According to Alison, spending two hours per day seated in front of a computer increases the risk of suffering from a heart disease by fifteen percent. However, spending countless hours indoors exposes teenagers to the risk of weight gain and obesity due to trifling physical exercises.
Some argue that social media increases the scope of teenagers towards education where they can share learning ideas and perfect them to realizable projects. The world is multiethnic with diverse cultures, and social media provides an interaction platform where teenagers can socialize and make new friends from all over the world. Progressive technology advancement prompts a change in the learning technique to incorporate social networking for purposes of exchanging information in a global virtual network (Boyd, 63). Social media has also proven as one of the best platforms for disseminating information and creating awareness on the social issues affecting the society. Social media has instigated political changes where social movements are used to mobilize citizens. The ability to find job opportunities is also an added advantage to social media users.
We must acknowledge that the advent of social media networking sites has been a significant boost to businesses, communication and education. However, research shows that there exists no correlation between social media usage and the overall class grades. In fact, social media is criticized for the increased cases of exam cheating. Social media has constantly been misused to leak private and confidential information against the will of an individual. There have been numerous cases where online advertising policies have been breached. Social media is also the root channel to crime-related activities where offenders can plan their robbery acts, recruit members or even distribute propaganda (O’Keeffe, Gwenn, and Kathleen, 804). There have also been numerous incidences of security breaches where hackers may access confidential information or personal accounts for malicious use. Consequently, cyber bullying has become prevalent in most social networking sites. Social media has also emerged as a platform for spreading false and unreliable information.
In conclusion, there is a need to regulate and limit social networking among teenagers. The bottom line is to instigate achievement of the set educational goals with minimal health and physical impacts due to addiction to social media (Kuss, Daria, and Mark, 3538). This calls for personal and collective responsibility for ensuring that social media is used significantly to address issues in business, communication, education and other social issues that affect the society. Advocators of social media usage should not ignore the risks related to social media addiction while overlooking the benefits allied to social networking.
