Wollstonecraft is one of the most critical and influential thinkers on matters to do with the rights of women in the society. She was also a big writer and incisive when it came to social issues, education and politics. Despite not being a constant libertarian, she was in support of both men and women rights while operating in a normal and general classical liberal framework. One of her most interesting investigations is that of subservient soldiers and subservient wives similarity. She concluded that both parties only live to please and they are taught to please. John Stuart Mill is one of the well-known figures as revered by the civil libertarians in the nineteenth century. He is mostly associated with his easy the liberty described as one of the best selling essays. The liberty explored more on an individual moral development and liberty.
In this piece of writing, the correspondences between the topic being discussed in the ‘A Vindication of the Rights of Women and Subjection of Women’ have been outlined. In both the books, they are talking about the issue of feminism; however, the solutions that they are bringing forth are entirely different. The primary problem being addressed is the issue women empowerment. They are showing how a woman plays a crucial role in the society. According to that time, women were viewed as less able than men. In the current society, there are a lot of programs trying to empower a woman and this benefit the whole society.

However, during the two author’s time, women were not respected enough and given the same priority as men. A woman was only supposed to be submissive to a man during that time.
English philosopher John Mill wrote the Subjection of Women. Mill talked about some critical issues about the women in the society and how they were being discriminated and subjected. He knew that when peoples moral and intellectual are developed then they would have joy and live in peace with one another. According to him, all human could acquire education and get civilized. He addressed the issue that women are effortless, not good at doing certain things that the men are capable of doing. As a result, the women used to be discouraged or outlawed from caring such tasks. He is against that issue and says that we have never given them an opportunity to show us what they are capable of performing. Therefore, having such an authority’s statement without evidence should not be the case.
“The anxiety of humanity to intervene on behalf of nature…is an altogether unnecessary solicitude. What women by nature cannot do, it is quite superfluous to forbid them from doing” (Mill, 8).
From that statement, it means that men are aware that women can do what a man can do; it is only that they have not given them the opportunity and platform. Women were discriminated and looked down upon not because they were less human being but because men wanted to dominate in the society. The tradition makes a woman appear to be someone who is docile and weak. When we promote equality, then women will enjoy their individualism minus be controlled and being told on what to do by a man. As a result, we will release some improvements taking place in the society.
He further went on and addressed the issue free market. The women should equally participate in matters dealing with the economy. The issue of education cut across all the gender. Both the women and the men are to benefit when they acquire knowledge. When the women receive the training, they will improve their intelligence. Initially, men would marry uneducated women. However, mill felt that when the women are educated, they will have the ability to interact with their husbands in an intellectual capacity thus reasoning together. In the marriage sector, he wanted to see the women the ability to develop themselves so that they can gain financial independence. Women form a considerable part of the human population .They should therefore, be allowed to vote because they have challenges that they face and they should address them by participating in the voting process.
Mary Wollstonecraft was a feminist philosopher and a proto-feminist. Wollstonecraft addresses the issues of rational education. According to her, the women should be given knowledge so that they can have the ability to play a role in the society. In the past, it was believed that the women were too fragile to think. However, Wollstonecraft is against that issue as he believes that the women can rationally think and therefore should be allowed to get good education.
“My main argument is built on this principle, that if (woman) be not prepared by education to become the companion of man, she will stop the progress of knowledge and virtue; for truth must be common to all.” (Wollstonecraft, 15).
She says women are rational; it is only that men have failed to educate them.
She also talks about the issue of women in matters of politics. She says men and women need be epitomized in a public office including the federal. She is more into individual happiness rather than the society. According to her, there should be both masculine and feminine roles for all the citizens.
From the above outlines, there are various issues that both the authors are discussing. However, all of them are aimed at empowering the gender of the women. They are actively supporting the women and trying to push them away from the inferior culture that has been killing their rights. They are both talking about the issues of education to women. The men have not given them an opportunity to learn. They are talking about financial independence of the ladies. Moreover, the issue of women in politics is also addressed in both the books and is closely related.
However, despite the fact that both the books are supporting the gender of women, their solutions significantly differentiate. In the issue of women education, Wollstonecraft is talking about rational education. She gives the answer that children should go to day school and also get a national education. Moreover, according to her, schooling should be co-educational. Mill also addresses the issue of education, but he says that women should be emancipated thus developing their intellectual level. Despite the small difference in their thinking on educating a women both support the idea that when a woman is educated she gets an equal chance just like a man to develop the society in a positive way (Wollstonecraft, 25).
Mill talks about women suffrage. He proposes that the women should participate in the direct voting of their election. The women should vote to protect their interest. Wollstonecraft also supports the issue of women in politics. In this era there are some countries that started allowing the women to take part in election just the other day. According to her, the roles of women and men should be separate. However, in the society today women are taking up those tasks that were handled by men before. Then men adopt the masculine positions then women should also have their feminine position. She is the issue of title including monarchy as it used to lock out women who wanted to be in politics. The issue of class is also addressed by the two thinkers. According to the mill, he talks about the women being given an opportunity to develop themselves outside their homes so that they can have financial stability. Wollstonecraft addresses the issue of class by cruising the rights of men. Some countries are still ragging behind in terms of development because women are not given a chance to participate.
In conclusion, both the books have played a key role in women empowerment. The two authors can be taken as the people who fueled women development. Their issues are common, however; all of them are addressed differently. Most of the famous thinkers in history had a soft heart when it came to women empowerment in the society. From the two readings, Mill is described as an outsider while Wollstonecraft is seen as an insider when it came to championing the rights of women, According to the two authors women’s rights are the same as of other human beings.
