Passing a message across as a civil rights activist in the US in the 60s involved numerous processes that were both time consuming and less effective. To communicate about racial discrimination, organize demonstrations, or write up to the authorities, it would take a lot of processes that did not guarantee that it would reach the intended audience in the form it was intended. In the modern dispensation, such communications will only take a tweet or a Facebook post to reach out to as many people as expected. Therefore, social media has made it easy to connect and to pass the message across effectively. It has also made it possible to bring people together into organized groups with a purpose. An excellent example of what social media made possible in the modern dispensation is the black lives matter activism that was organized on social media, and it was spread far and wide resulting in demonstrations across the country. Social media has made it easy to effectively reach out to people in both formal and informal manner.
Group actions have primarily been limited to formal organizations because of organization’s need for people to work in groups. Having groups outside organizations is considered ineffective due to lack of unity of purpose. However, social media has been changing that in that it has facilitated the formation of groups and effective running of groups. Collective actions have come with the desire to find out what others are doing or to solve problems that are affecting others.

Groups are formed for a well-defined purpose and they exist until the target for its formation is achieved (Shirky, 2008). Cancer awareness campaign has never been made easier than the current use of Facebook group where people are invited. In the group educative posts about cancer are regularly posted while interactions allow experts to respond to questions. The group’s purpose is to educate people about cancer and ways to deal with the disease.
