Law Enforcement Training On Mental Disorder
Mental disorder is a significant issue that affects many people in the population. As such, training the law enforcement team on how to deal with such individuals is an essential aspect if they encounter such cases. According to Ingram, Laan, & Glidden (53), law enforcement in America has started identifying mental health as a significant issue that affects the police department due to challenges of responding to such cases. On the other hand, the current training undergone by the police appears ineffective due to violent incidences that arise when dealing with autistic and special needs suspects. As such, the implementation of new specialized programs will be significant in educating officers on responsive strategies when handling autistic and special needs suspects. It is essential to extend the time police officers receive training on mental health which would be crucial in addressing effective coverage of the topic.
The time allotted to police training in special cases such as handling suspects with autistic and other special needs cases is not sufficient. According to Ingram, Laan, & Glidden (54), police have only six hours to cover the training on special needs which is insufficient to effectively handle the broad concept of mental health and other related concerns. As such, extensive training on the topic would help cover various phases such as basic preservice, and field, and in-service training.

However, field training is the most significant since it involves impacting skills, knowledge, and abilities under direct supervision. Also, it is essential to provide sufficient training materials and frequent reevaluation of the curriculum to ensure consistency with available guidelines in the area of autism and mental disorder. Incorporating aspects such as interaction and communication with people with mental disorder would help foster a positive relationship with such individuals.
