Personal Values Week 6
Personal values might conflict with ethical responsibilities through ways such as bribery actions, embezzlement of public funds or conducting kickbacks to pursue personal satisfaction at the community’s expense. For instance, if I become a greedy person, such a personal value would justify the act of bribery in the society making it difficult to serve people right. The duties of a public servant are complex, multiple and often conflicting. Civil servants have to employ an array of quality values in an attempt to guide their behaviors and to be a successful servant one requires to recognize their objective responsibilities. The ways to be prepared for multiple roles include regulating, adjudicating, maintaining the secret, ensuring accountability and most importantly avoiding conflict of interest.
Poor intelligibility about the right values may not only affect ethical decision-making but also impact the coherence of the organization by lowering team spirit. A public servant is bound morally, to respect people and their property and tell the truth while abiding by the law (Bailey, 2018). However, sometime it might be difficult to adhere to professional values when our values such as emotion of love dictate our deeds. For instance, one might fall in love with workmates, confide and trust them such that it becomes difficult to report them when they make an offense. When called to serve society, I would avoid labeling and try hard to understand the pathways and attached difficulties through which I have undergone.
