Comparison of Good over Evil in Cue for Treason
Thesis
In the novel Cue for Treason, Geoffrey Trease explores the theme of good over evil. In many instances from the novel, evil outdoes the good. This is brought about through the character traits and theme.
Introduction
The story starts in a village in Cumberland, North England where the author explores the golden age of Queen Elizabeth. A wall is built to restrict the locals from using the common field, Peter with other villagers try to destroy Sir Philips wall; he engages Philip’s men in a fight that result in his hat been fired before he escapes to Perinth. He later exposes the conspiracy to kill the Queen during a performance though he encounters many evils before achieving it. Trease uses the value of courageousness, self-assurance and patriotism to fight evil. These traits are essential in developing a strong, proud nation and ensuring its survival against enemies.
Courageousness
Peter and kit are in different difficult situations that depict the evil that the people of Cumberland were going through. His courageous, selfless personality amplifies the good in the society. When Peter shucks into the “yellow gentlemen” houses and he got his stolen playback. It also showed where Peter is climbing the side of the house though it was not easy, “each time I put weight on a fresh dagger, my heart went into my mouth, and I heard myself for the splash below”(pg.132).On realizing that Mr.

Armthwaite was part of the plot Peter and Kit escapes with his horse to London though they had inadequate funds to sustain them on the way they find money on the horse.
Patriotism
It is one of the personalities that most of the characters have to advance good in the society. When kit made notes on his script he wanted his master at Keswick to rejoice, he had the speech and manner of a gentleman (Pg 72, paragraph 1). It is also evident through the character of Peter when is held captive on the island for questioning “I knew I had a fight this was not normal sunny bathing trip” (pg 201) since he knew only he knew of the plot, he engages Duncan and he swims away.
Self-assuredness
It is clear that confidence is needed to overcome evil in the society. The writer uses confident characters such as Peter to fight for the sake of the society. He tries his best to sabotage Sir Philip Morten plan to assassinate the queen, and he also fought against many conspiracies, but he never gave in “It was hot in the chest, but I was afraid to come out even when silence was around me” (Pg 48-49).Taking on such a job it required confidence and enormous responsibility, Peter is seen as confident when he engages the men of Philips who were armed with a stone.
Conclusion
In the novel Cue for Treason by Geoffrey good over evil is depicted through character such as Peter, Kit, Desmonds, who stands for the good of society. Characters such as Sir Philip and his men, Mr. Armthwaite are the champions of evil. Patriotism, where characters love their country, ensures fight against the evil and enemies of the country, Writer uses courageous also to fight evil. Peter and Kit manage to save the queen and the people of Cumberland since their land was brought back. Self –assured is also used to enhance good in the society. This novel encouraged people to be an agent of good since it is the only weapon against evil.
