In Maya’s scenario, a Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy model will be applied by the counselor. Developed by Albert Ellis, this theory focuses on solving behavioral and emotional problems by transforming irrational self-beliefs into rational ones (Ghasemian, D’Souza & Ebrahimi, 2012). Usually, the targeted beliefs are triggered by situational cues emanating from inferential or real activating events and can inhibit professional development and happiness.
The Rational-Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT) assumes that negative emotions and behaviors can be changed by the realization of the demarcation between irrational and rational beliefs (Katsikis et al., 2016). Thus, the ensuing reactions can be altered to suit the empirical reality within an individual’s social environment. For instance, embracing preferences rather than demands and unconditional acceptance of weaknesses can help in decreasing frustration and loss of esteem.
Albert Ellis’ REBT proposes coaching and psychotherapy as the primary interventional measures (Ellis, 2017). Accordingly, psychotherapy is underlined as a treatment mechanism while coaching is considered as a proactive and preventive measure. However, for a full recovery, a combination of both can be deployed. In coaching, Ellis (2017) points out that the type of coaching varies from one patient to another because of differences in the domain, change levels, setting, and delivery modes.

Ultimately, Maya’s presentation of the problem requires psychotherapy as identified in Elli’s theory. The prolonged anxiety and depression replicate irrational assumptions that can be countered by the REBT model following the steps identified in the following section.
Treatment Plan
The emotions associated with Maya’s presentation of the problem are; stress, anxiety, disengagement, low self-esteem, low confidence, and lack of sleep. Consequently, the REBT model recommends the following steps;
The client will identify the activating events of her condition, the resulting negative beliefs, and the accompanying dysfunctional behaviors.
The patient will undertake breathing exercises at home and work as many times as possible.
The client will develop a work-life balance plan that entails sessions with family, friends, and those closest to her.
