Description
In “Everything that rises must converge” by Flannery O’Connor, the speaker tells the story of Julian and her mother. Julian escorts her mother every week to the weight loss class to reduce her high blood pressure. Julian’s mother is exhibited as a racist who does not want to interact with the African Americans. Although she acknowledges that blacks need to be allowed to rise on their own, she also emphasizes that they should rise in their territories without interacting with the whites. On the other hand, Julian strives to annoy her mother by associating with the blacks. He wishes that his mother respects the blacks despite their color. At the end of the story, Julian’s mother engages in a confrontation an African American.
Theme
Flannery exhibits the theme of race. In this, the whites do not acknowledge and respect the freedom of the African Americans. Julian’s mother is against the rise of blacks in the white’s territory. She says, “They should rise, yes, but on their own side of the fence” ((O’Connor 634). Julian is annoyed with how his mother treats the blacks to the extent that he ponders to teach her mother a lesson. He thinks about inviting a black professor or lawyer for dinner at their home. Also, he contemplates of her mother being sick and treated by a black doctor. Julian wants her mother to accept the blacks.
Idea
The key idea of the story is about racism. The author exhibits that people need to respect each other regardless of their race and social class.

Julian wishes that her mother appreciates the blacks. He thinks of actions that could bring his mother closer to the blacks. Equal treatment is likely to foster cohesion which in turn leads to a respectful relationship.
