Productive Struggle for All: Differentiated Instruction
Summary
It is a fact that in a classroom not all students are similar. They have their differences which vary from one individual to another. They differ on the basis of gender, social background, language among others. Therefore, it is the task of the teacher to come up with a way of handling all of them at a go. Their levels of understanding are different hence they need to be taught using different methods depending on each student’s level and ability. Ms. Young is faced with this task and has seen that using the above formula is not working on all students. It was then that she discovers that her students have different ways of grasping mathematical concepts and therefore she has to accept them and find a way of accommodating all of them (Lynch, Hunt & Lewis, 2018).
There are two significant ways that the teachers in collaboration to ensure that they are able to reach to all the students. The first is by use of the differentiated instructions and secondly, is by using the productive struggle. The differentiated instruction is what most teachers are familiar with. They can be useful in their teaching by considering the unique characteristics of each student, therefore, being able to reach to each individual student. They can do this by modification of the following; one is what content the student is learning at the moment.

Wait! Differentiated Instruction paper is just an example!

Secondly, the process the student is using to get the information in that content (Lynch, Hunt & Lewis, 2018). Lastly, is the end results of the method the used, here the teacher analyses whether the technique used was adequate.
The second method is by use of productive struggle, where the teacher gives the student only a guideline, and the students find the rest for themselves (Lynch, Hunt &Lewis, 2018). It is the best technique to help a student in learning mathematics. Since mathematics is a difficult subject, productive struggle give the students the opportunity to use their critical thinking in their learning process.
Reaction
From the article what interested me most was the part where one would integrate both the differentiated instruction and productive struggle in order to obtain the best results from the class. Using the above can be very useful in providing the best strategies to the students to tackle mathematical problems. From my own point of view, the ideas presented were the best. I strongly agree with the way the author presented the ideas logically on how they could be of help to the students. From the article I learned a lot of things, to begin with, is that fact that students are different and have different personalities. Then how to approach each student according to their capabilities. How to use productive struggle as well as differentiated instructions among other methods to ensure the students get the best out of the class. The above topic is something that I would gladly introduce to my class. Instead of straining my students and me, in the process, I would instead use the methods and make learning more enjoyable. The above techniques are the best in bringing a hard topic to the level where each student can easily understand and interpret. Thereby, making the work of a teacher much more comfortable than thought.
