Eddie is the main character in the play and is very passionate about parenting. He is very keen on how Catherine behaves and that’s why every decision made in the house must pass his approval (Miller, 2015). Although the domination of the man may be seen as an outdated behavior, it works best for the parents. Once the parents, and especially the father, dominate the house affairs, the members, and particularly children, will never go astray. Eddie is also furious when Catherine dates Rodolpho since he can see the sinister motive behind this relationship. Although Catherine is seeing Rodolpho like any other young man interested in love, Eddie can see clearly that he just want to use the girl to gain citizenship (Miller, 2015). Eddie pays close attention to the developments taking place in his house. It is the role of every parent and especially the man to know what is happening inside his house. Although he notes the developments in Catherine on a bad light, he is a good parent by being observant.
Beatrice fulfills the role of parent by showing concern and care to Catherine. Throughout the play, Beatrice is portrayed as a caring parent especially to Catherine and the care is further extended to Eddie. First, she asks Catherine to stop behaving like a child especially in front of Eddie. She further questions Eddie’s feelings towards Catherine exhibiting her concern for the life of the girl like any other parent (Miller, 2015). She also mediates when tension arises between the characters regardless of her affiliation showing the necessary parental concern.
