Emperor Hirohito
Emperor Hirohito was the Japanese longest serving emperor; reigned for 63 years. Born in a royal family and soon to be the successor of his father, he acquired all the necessary skills he required to be the next king and leader of Japan. He led Japan to much prosperity and success in battles. The World War II, however, did not go well for the country as it left a lot of scars, but they were able to raise and become the second-largest economy after the war.
Emperor Hirohito was not in support of Japan going to war (WWII). Nonetheless, when they decided to go to war, he became a great supporter and even planned the attack on the Pearl Harbor that was a great influence on the War. Although considered sacred, and no one was even allowed to question him, the emperor intervened to end the war stalemate to stop the suffering of his people. He asked his cabinet to end the war and stop the suffering of his people (Hays, 3). He further went ahead to announce the surrender of Japan after the bombing of Nagasaki and Hiroshima. With the win by the allied powers, they allowed him to keep his throne but denounced his sacred status and that Japanese’s people were not superior to other people of the world.
With the devastating effects of the war, the country needed reconstruction, and the emperor was willing to lead the nation to prosperity, which was penance for leading them to war. He played a crucial role in campaigning for democracy and even helped the country peacefully transition to a democratic nation, with the guidance of Douglas MacArthur (Hays, 5), who had earlier intervened to stop his execution.
