Infant and toddler development provides opportunities for the care providers to understand the behavioral dynamics and the needs of the children. Guidance and relationships realignments are important elements in the care provision since the adults interact with the child get to chance to not only correct the unacceptable behaviors but also to offer the appropriate supportive development. This essay argues that the aspects of child development such as curiosity, exploration, and discovery can lead to challenging behavior that may necessitate the caregivers to guide the children as well as change the relationships appropriately to attain the desired or appropriate conduct.
Curiosity, exploration, and discovery may seem to be challenging or result to misbehavior when the toddlers engage in actions such as putting materials in their mouths, biting others, and pushing objects to see what happens next. The infants may also disregard the verbal instructions by the caregivers to stay calm. Understanding of the child development in the various domains such as cognitive, psychological, emotional, social, and physical is therefore useful for the care providers to predict the potential need for guidance in the care environments. The different stages of development may also be associated with different challenging behaviors. For instance, pre-mobile infants may be crying while the mobile babies may exhibit tendencies like crawling on others and mouthing toys.

Opportunities for guidance and relationship realignment occur since the caring adults can apply the three R’s of guidance that includes respect, relate, and reflect. Respect aims at building self-worth while relate allows the caregivers to build positive relationships. Reflection provides the opportunity to the caring adults to examine their reactions before they act. For instance, the caregiver may model positive attitudes by reflecting on the impact of a response to a behavior of a child such as knocking down objects.
