Summary of the poem “Beowulf” lines 1-166
Beowulf ranks first as the most celebrated poem related to the Anglo-Saxons, as well as, take the front as the most celebrated form of alliterative tradition. The attempts by Heaney to translate the classical piece to a modern verse sought to substitute text that would relate to the contemporary poetry enthusiasts. The subject matter in Beowulf carries the themes of Victory over threats on homeland, and the susceptibility of the social bonds due to the effects of violence. The ability of Heaney to translate the book in total conformity, however, seemed constrained since the translations employ the use of outdated terms, as well as those he got an influence from by being Irish. An example of such a word was “bolian” which overtly alluded to suffering. These flaws significantly made the whole piece lose connection and coherence in advancing the plots of the poem.
The poem opens up an account of the valor in which the society mundanely celebrated heroic acts. The poem indicates themes such as wealth and social class. The relevance of the book to the time published coincides significantly with how Heaney uses the classical themes, setting, and language in the translation.
The poem proceeds to advance the plots relative to the era Norton wrote, as well as maintain the originality of the author’s mannerisms in writing. An example is in the use of “Tholed” in the third line of the third stanza.
