In the analysis of Chekhov Anton The Lady with the Dog, Joyce Oates Where are you Going and The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao, by Diaz, give a deliberate view of the position of three different women who are Anna, Connie, and Lola respectively. The authors reflect the lives of young women engulfed in a world of self-discovery, love, and transformation. Therefore, this essay will concentrate on the three women by exploring their place, time and culture as reflected in the novels.
Anna stands out as a 22-year-old tangled in marriage and feeling stifled by her life. The author uses this character to show the position/place of women when it comes to marriage and the challenge they face while trying to re-identify themselves (Chekhov 15). Anna shows a culture of woman’s servitude who is caught up in her own guilt in marriage. Despite being married at a younger age, Anna still feels the urge to find new love and freedom. On the other hand, Connie is seen as a young girl trapped in her exploding sexual persona. She represented a free spirit woman blossoming with love (Oates 1). Connie draws the culture of an attractive and sexually active woman who tries to discover her body and personality through maturity. Lola reflects the place of a 12-year-old girl maturing into her youth. Lola just like the other girls tries to identify her personality as a teenager and this makes her become repulsive (Diaz 32). She presented a culture of young women transitioning into puberty, as they try to adapt to changes in their personality and appearance.
