Estrangement by Jamaica Kincaid
Born in 1949 in Antigua, Jamaica Kincaid at the age of seventeen moved to the United States where she worked in an Au Pair program in New York. Kincaid used different literally forms of writing to express her message clearly. Among the literally forms she used is repetition. In estrangement, repetition is used in the following instances.
Repetition is the act of repeating, Kincaid repeats that “I would rather be dead than spend eternity lying next to her’’ (McQuade, & Atwan, 2003, p. 170). Kincaid is talking about her mother who in many cases we would love to spend eternity with our mothers, though she says their mother was like a God, and after her death, she left a space she emphasizes about eternity to bring out how bad her mother was. During her burial, all people said good things about her “There were descriptions of her good and selfless deeds, kindness, generosity, testaments of her love expressed in humor.” (McQuade, & Atwan, 2003, p. 170). Kincaid, on the other hand, says that the way people described her mother was like not the mother she knew since she was not that good “The person we knew our mother, said horrible things to us more often than not” (McQuade, & Atwan, 2003, p. 170). Kincaid repeats eternity to show that she would never wish to spend more time with her mother, she tries to bring out the other side of their mother which is terrible.
In conclusion, Jamaica Kincaid uses repetition in her text to explain more about her mother.
