If you could meet any one of the 13 people profiled in the book Everyday Heroes, who would it be and why?
My Hero: Xinrong “Cindy” Liu
Everyone has their hero, someone they look up to or who inspires them. A hero is “a person admired for achievements and noble qualities, one who shows great courage” (Merriam Webster 1). Given a chance to meet one of the 13 heroes, I would like to meet Xinrong “Cindy” Liu. I would choose to meet Cindy for reasons such as her fearless nature, Cindy’s belief in herself and hard work and her curiosity.
First, I would choose to meet Cindy because of her fearlessness. Cindy was just eighteen years old when she moved to Kansas City. She couldn’t communicate in English, and there were no Chinese people there. Even so, Cindy was not afraid, and she even attempted to communicate with the Americans. Cindy says that “I don’t know why I wasn’t more afraid” (Johnson 116). Similarly, she tried to fit in an English-speaking school even though she couldn’t understand her teachers. Anyone would have been scared but not Cindy.
Secondly, I would have liked to meet Cindy due to her belief in herself. Cindy worked hard to fit in her new surroundings and never gave up even when learning got difficult. She says that her experiences were tough emotionally, and sometimes she would cry at night wanting to give up, but she never did (Johnson 118). Instead, she pushed herself to get help and managed to graduate from high school and joined college. Today her English is close to perfect.

Likewise, Cindy works hard to pay for her college tuition.
Lastly, I would have loved to meet Cindy because of her curious nature. Cindy was curious and always ready to learn something new. Even in the first confusing hours of interacting with her new environment, Cindy was still curious (Johnson 116). Her inquisitive nature also drove her to ask her teachers for help, and this helped her fit in. Likewise, she never liked being seen as incapable, and this made her seek assistance.
In conclusion, Cindy’s qualities and achievements inspire me, and that is why I always try to emulate her. Her fearlessness, believing in herself even in the face of obstacles and her yearning to acquire knowledge makes me interested in meeting her.
