The management of ships is not as easy as many people think. Ship management inculcates different tasks that are done during pre-sail, during the sail, and post-sail. After the ship is approved by the relevant bodies, the ship management team ventures into other processes such as the selection of crew. Selecting a vessel crew is as important as other vessel management processes and it involves the consideration of various factors. This paper, therefore, seeks to discuss the factors that are considered when selecting a vessel crew.
The first factor to be considered when selecting a crew is the professional experience and skills of the seafarers ADDIN CSL_CITATION { “citationItems” : [ { “id” : “ITEM-1”, “itemData” : { “abstract” : “In cooperation with 2 Ship managers are under increasing pressure. The management has to ensure that the selected crew members have the required experience of sailing in the sea. They also have to be well-equipped with the sea knowledge and experience in regards to the challenges that may arise when sailing. And in order to achieve this, the recruitment team has to thoroughly check and test the training credentials of the applicant vessel crews.
Another important factor that should be considered is the homogeneity of the selected crew members ADDIN CSL_CITATION { “citationItems” : [ { “id” : “ITEM-1”, “itemData” : { “abstract” : “In cooperation with 2 Ship managers are under increasing pressure. In this regard, the vessel management has to look at the togetherness of the vessel crew while working at sea or ashore. This will be achieved by the management team checking whether the workforce is loyal to each other and is able to pull together when necessary in order to ensure that sailing is effective and efficient.
Other factors that can also be considered include the costs of hiring a particular sail crew. The management has to make a decision on the costs that would be required to remunerate and maintain the crew when pitted against the ship management’s budget and the efficiency of the select vessel crew ADDIN CSL_CITATION { “citationItems” : [ { “id” : “ITEM-1”, “itemData” : { “abstract” : “In cooperation with 2 Ship managers are under increasing pressure. In conclusion, just like other ship management process, selecting an efficient and effective vessel crew involves the consideration of several factors. Some of these factors include the homogeneity of the select crew, the hiring costs of the crew, and the professional experience of the seafarers.
