Analysis of As I Lay Dying
Freud’s psychoanalytic theory provides critical insight into the passage. After Addie dies, her family members react differently to the situation. Her husband does not seem affected by her death, his reaction is more logical as he assumes that Addie does not suffer anymore. Cash and Dew, on the other hand, are stifled by the death of their mother. Cash, for example, cannot approach his mother’s body but remains committed to building her a coffin. Use of the feminist theory illustrates the place of gender roles in society. The remaining female in the family, Dew, is tasked to taking over female gender roles. In this regard, her father asks her to take on their mother’s role and cook for the male members of the family. Pa says, “Git up, now, and put supper on,” ( Faulkner, 46). Using both lenses to analyze the narrative, diverse understanding of the story comes to the fore, and the story is better understood.
Using the feminist theory, an understanding of how gender roles impact society is understood (Juan 6). In the short excerpt men and women are represented as having different gender roles. For instance, Dell cooks while Cash takes on building the casket. Psychoanalytic theory opens the understanding of the reader to choices people make based on the id, ego, and super-ego (De Board 12). Cash, for instance, remains committed to his task despite the grief he feels for his deceased mother. An example of the ego taking prominence, in the alternative Dell’s forced reaction is an example of the id’s desire for immediate gratification.
