Cybersecurity Breach Article Review
Retrieved from https://www.buzzfeed.com/hannahryan/suncorp-royal-commission-bankAccording to the article, members of Suncorp which is an Australian bank had their personal information published online for almost two months. The customers published personal information included dates of birth, salaries, gender, addresses, phone numbers, beneficiaries, and email addresses among other details. The personal data was published on a spreadsheet containing personal information of customers and employees that the bank had submitted to Royal Banking Commission of Australia before an earlier request.
The bank had put in place practice procedure, and guidelines for submission of customers information to the commission that involved handing over the info after parties requesting the information made redactions before the publication of the data, and they accepted not to publish the data unless it was not necessary to do so. The bank should, therefore, have ensured that the established procedures were followed before handing over the information.
Suncorp, however, issued the information to the commission since the document handed over included a non-publication agreement and hence did not require redaction. The control weakness that resulted from the deviation consists of the realization that the established procedures and guidelines that controlled the handing over of client information were ineffective.
Wait! Find an article that describes a recent cybersecurity security breach paper is just an example!
The materiality of the established procedures and practices and the deviation from the guidelines indicated that the established practices were ineffective and hence an establishment of new practices governing the handing over of client information was necessary. My recommendation is the establishment of more effective practices and monitoring of client information when handling it over to other parties such as the commission and monitoring how other parties such treat the data once it is handed over.
