According to the article, the state of Florida has the highest number of sinkholes in the country. Most of Florida lies on carbonate rocks made up of limestone and dolostone, making the region prone to sinkholes (Balogh, 2). Predicting sinkhole is difficult, and scientists from NASA have developed a way to foresee forecast sinkhole formation with the use of Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) system. It is a remote sensor that uses radar to detect changes in ground elevation over time. Florida has seen a decrease in property value in areas prone to sinkholes. Additionally, the insurance rates have increased significantly over the years to cater for the high number of cases caused by sinkholes.
