Unobtrusive methods of research are popular in criminal justice. It refers to the application of nonreactive measures of gathering data to obtain information about particular subjects without them being aware that they are being studied. The use of unobtrusive research helps to overcome the subject’s reactivity and stooge effects which could interfere with the quality of information (Hagan 239). It enables the researcher to come up with objective findings.
Various methods are applied for unobtrusive research in the study of the subjects. These include analysis of physical trace evidence, disguised observation, simple observation, simulation, content analysis, archival or existing data, and autobiographies (Hagan 239). Physical trace analysis involves studying the accretions of matter, deposits as well as other indirect materials that are evidence of previous human interaction in a given area. Using the physical trace evidence, the researcher tries to reconstruct the substances to derive a fact and obtain evidence.
Besides, the disguised observation entails looking at the subjects without them being aware that they are being studied. Under this observation method, the researcher studies the subjects by temporarily misrepresenting their role (Hagan 240). This is unlike the direct observation where the researcher rarely participates in the subject’s activities but keeps a record of what they are doing. On the other hand, using simulation, the researcher applies a variety of gaming strategies that reflect complex social realities to derive a fact about the subjects.

Content analysis entails the activities of systematic study of the mass media content. Such information can be acquired from the newspapers and magazines which have been written about a person and can act like a reputable source of information to the researcher. Similarly, archived data and autobiographies form essential sources of information about previous events and personalities. The method enables the researcher to use the previously available information to study personalities and events.
