Hero Essay
A hero is someone that usually emerges during the time of need and helps out his people. Heroes are often considered to be courageous and able to stand when almost everyone had given up. Such individuals use their strength to give hope back to others. Not all heroes are leaders, but through their heroic deeds, people decide to join them. Beowulf is one of the most extended anglo-saxon poem composed in an epic set in the sixth century. As it begins, we hear of Dane’s royal dynasty and how its reign was prosperous until Grendel came to the picture during the era of King Hrothgar.
Grendel who was believed to be Cain’s descendant was huge and killed many warriors of the kingdom. It was at this time that Beowulf came to the rescue of the king. He was honorable and confident regardless of challenges that came his way. Beowulf exhibited his traits of courage, loyalty, and honesty while battling Grendel and also when encountering Grendel’s mother. As a hero, Beowulf was transparent and never tried to use some malicious strategies in defeating his enemies (Snell, 2006).
Since Grendel had killed a lot of other warriors, one would have expected Beowulf to be afraid and take any chance to beat him regardless of whether it was fair or not. But that was not the approach taken by this warrior; he did not even carry a weapon with him as he awaited Grendel in Heorot. Beowulf was a hero as he defeated an enemy that seemed invisible. All this he did not expecting any prize in return.
