“U.N.C. Chancellor Apologizes for History of Slavery at Chapel Hill” by Jacey Fortin on The New York Times, October 13, 2018
I selected the article because it addresses the theme of slavery. We discussed and deliberated on the way slavery shaped American history before and after the civil war. Slavery existed in the American colonies and its public institutions. The article features education institutions as a key channel for addressing the history of slavery.
The articles talk about Chancellor Carol. L. Folt’s apologies for the legacy of history associated with the University of North Carolina (UNC). Chancellor Carol acknowledged the injustices and endurance of the enslaved people at Chapel Hill as the first public university. Fortin reported that Chancellor was responding to the protests dubbed, ‘Silent Sam’ against Confederate monuments and statues. The article revealed Chancellor Carol’s effort to remove statues or figures that reminded people of the checkered history.
The article addresses the emotive subject of slavery in America. Fortin reports a sensitive subject where the education sector formed a foundation but insists on the preservation of tools guided by UNC’s online exhibition. Revealing UNC’s effort to eliminate enslavement traces including names such as William Rand Kenan Sr. who were part of the Ku Klux Klan movements in the 1800s was imperative. The article could have revealed other institutional efforts to eliminate symbols of enslavement for comparison purposes.
Wait! History. paper is just an example!
Nevertheless, the article offers a basis for writing the wrongs of history while giving people a platform to understand slavery particularly between 1793 and 1865. Moreover, we discussed in class the essence of revisiting history to embrace American history. Correspondingly, Fortin shows that public institutions and administrators should be on the forefront in leading the campaign against enslavement based on the histories of Natives and African Americans as opposed to disseminating the teaching alone.
I concur with Fortin that institutions should champion the removal of monuments that exemplify white supremacy. However, preservation is important because only then can people learn about the key steps America has made to achieve equality. I view the article as a call to action for administrators to remove foundations or symbols that reflect past or present racial violence or slavery.
