Smith, Turkel, and Wolf note that nursing is about caring and compassion (407). With a bachelor’s degree in psychology, I have been practicing nursing for the last fifteen years and this time has been the most fulfilling for me. I have derived immense gratification from assisting people at their hour of need. Sure, I have had some obstacles in my life but have been able to overcome them and proceed with a very successful and varied nursing background.
I am working towards becoming a family nurse practitioner (FNP) focusing on holistic or alternative therapies that reduce the duration a patient stays in the hospital setting. I am of the conviction that proper nutrition, exercise, healthy relationships, and a strong system of social support will produce a very content and satisfied life. Upon becoming an FNP, I intend to specialize in the psychiatric aspects of practice because this is where my strong attributes are at its best.
I feel that my platform will a significant portion of the population that remains underserved. In this manner, I believe I will make a significant difference in the care they receive. I have a strong passion for substance abuse and chemical dependency, and I feel that individuals suffering from these disorders are not only stigmatized in the society, but could also benefit from a new approach to care that negates the stigma and promotes a wholesome approach that involves disease diagnosis with a curable treatment modality.
Wait! holistic/alternative medicine as my platform paper is just an example!
I believe that I will be an integral part of the process of helping patients experience a new way of life permanently. Because they will require consistent guidance and support in achieving their care goals, becoming an FNP specializing in psychiatric health will help me make a difference in the lives of many people.
