Six Sigma Principles
Sigma principles are set of tools which an organization uses in order to improve their processes. The six sigma principles help both large scale and small scale organizations to minimize the factors that cause defects in processes, thereby enhancing the quality of produced output. However, they were previously designed to help large organizations (Jones and Erick 5). Generally, the principles try to eliminate the gap that results in variations in the business activities.
Sigma project provides the steps to follow in order to attain some set target or standard. As such, on campus, one can apply the six sigma principles by setting target scores of a test for example to 100 %. This can be said to be the concept of “larger is better.” At work, one can use the concept of “smaller is better” where he creates an upper limit lowering the chances of any disparity to zero. Six Sigma principles are also applicable to the community and in the personal life of an individual. At the personal and community level, the concept of “nominal is best” is applied where one tries to solve a problem depending on some set criterion (Jones and Erick 5). However, the individual keeps track of how the solution is reached to avoid losing more than acquired.
DMAIC
DMAIC is a sigma methodology applied to improve business processes. It comprises of five phases which include; defining the problem, measuring the current process results, analyzing the process, improving the process and finally putting control measures.
Wait! how the Six Sigma principles could improve quality of work paper is just an example!
For a process to be improved effectively, the managers require first to identify what the problem is, who the customers are and what they expect, the goals to be achieved and the resources that are required for the successful process to occur. Secondly, they should gather enough data to analyze the performance of the current processes thereby identifying defects and deviations. Thirdly, they should analyze how the process performs and what causes defects in that process. After identifying the root causes of the defects, they should devise solutions which eliminate the root causes of the problem. Finally, they should ensure that the new processes are controlled to avoid them from getting affected by the same causes as the old ones (Jones and Erick 5).
