It is clear that the amount of sugar that each person consumes is way above the required mark. This can be attested by the ever-growing prevalence of obesity, hypertensive cases, heart disease, and diabetes among the American populace. While Dr. Lustig proposes that people should reduce their sugar consumption to about 150 calories among men and 100 calories among women (steinway135). As drastic as it sounds, this may then reduce the rates of plaque formation (LDL-Low Density Lipoproteins), which are associated with the problem of increased prevalence of lifestyle disease.
While it is easy to point fingers at the sugar industry, a government crackdown would only provide a partial solution. In short, it should be the consumers’ mandate to reduce the sugars they consume and lead a healthy life.
If indeed the government is to impose any regulations, then these regulations should be on products’ sugar content labeling. Labeling the amount of sugar found in different foods will go a long way in helping the public make informed choices on the amount of sugar that they consume. Labeling regulations can only be achieved through legislation in the Senate. Also, oversight authorities should always be on the look for those who break laws in regards to proper food sugar content labeling.
