American Express Company which has its headquarters in New York is a reputable global financial services provider. The company appeared in “Fortune 100 Best Companies to Work for” for two consecutive years in 2017 and 218. The company was ranked number 23 in 2018 and 69 in 2017. The company faces stiff completion in the credit card space. Its major competitor is Discover Financial Services (DFS). DFS was not ranked as the best company to work for by Fortune magazine both in 2018 and 2017. Both companies offer financial services through the use of credit cards and have similar business models. Credit cards are popular with consumers, and they not only make their shopping convenient but improve their safety by virtue of the card’s use which makes the risks of carrying cash remote. Both America Express and Discover Financial Services issue cards to their respective clients and this make them bear all the financial risks that come with it. Both companies used what is referred to as open-loop system since when a client uses their cards, the merchant get all the required approval for the specific transaction from these companies.
American Express performs better than DFS not only because it targets up-market consumers but also the way it treats its employees. Employees are empowered to create impact and deliver value to their customers, and this creates satisfaction among the employees. When employees are empowered to deliver their duties successfully, they will feel appreciated and would be proud of their employer (Gennard & Judge, 2010).
