Insignificant Past Event
Growing up I always sought attention, and I liked being treated like an adult. I made sure I followed whatever instruction is given to me and completed my chores on time before my mother came back home from work. Being the only child made me feel as though less was expected of me as there was no sibling with whom I could be compared to (Smith and Watson 11). I recall one weekend during the summer holidays both my parents had gone on a vacation and left me with Aunty Maggie (my mother’s youngest sister). She had just lost her job as a junior school teacher and was residing at our place before deciding on the next move to take. She and I did not get along so well because I always felt as though she took me for of a child rather than the teenager I was. On this day I had gone to hang out with my best friend Claire who happened to be our neighbor too. Together we loved to watch movies and do activities such as hiking and cycling outdoors together. Claire and I got along so well because she was fun, adventurous and submissive. Immediately our movie ended we stepped out to get out bicycles and go cycling.
Aunty Maggie tried stopping me claiming that my dad had warned her not to let me have my bicycle before he serviced it. I convinced her I had it all under control as I took the necessary tools from the garage and fixed everything myself. My aunt avoided arguing with me, so she just let me be. And off we went riding. But just as I was peddling a few meters from the gate, I noticed two cars approaching each other which meant I had to stop and let the vehicles pass since the road was kind of narrow.

That was when it hit me that I had forgotten to fix the brakes; they were not working at all. By bad luck, I was now moving down a slope, and the speed was still accelerating. Claire was behind me shouting, “Slow down, let the cars through” as the horn of the car behind me beeped. I guess I must have been shocked and jumped off the bicycle into a bush just along the road. I did not get hurt as such expect from having a twisted wrist which Aunt Maggie helped me fix.
I expected her to be hostile and repeat that she had warned me not to take the bicycle. On the contrary, she did not utter a word, in fact, she commended me for being swift on taking action ones I noticed my brakes were not operational. And when my parents came back, she did not even tell them of the incident. She acted as though it was just some petty issue that had just happened but to me, it seemed huge. I had expected her to tell my father how I had violated his instructions of not touching the bicycle. And from that weekend Aunty Maggie started treating me like a young adult just like I always wanted, and this created a stable bond between us. Whenever I look back at this incident, I no longer see it as something big as I used to back then. But one thing I learned from the whole thing is that small or insignificant things tend to make teenagers feel recognized and appreciated.
