The recreation program to select
The best recreation program to help Kim should be participant involvement in the adaptation process. Kim’s cycling ability was severely challenged due to the 30 pounds gained after the accident. Involving her in the adaptation process is therefore essential as this helps in determining various ways in which she can adapt to regain her cycling ability. Through the previous assessment carried out on Kim, she enjoys competitive physical activities which she learns by trying them out. It is therefore essential that she be involved in allowing coming up with different strategies that suit her situation.
Involvement of a participant in the recreational therapy helps in enhancing body image perceptions (Smith, 2). Kim’s goal is to return to the competitive cycling which can only be attained after losing the gained 30 pounds. To help her achieve this, it is necessary that the therapy involves practice. As a therapist, engaging her in the competitive physical activities like exercises can help her regain the lost glory. Involving her also helps in determining areas that need improvement and at the same time, marking areas that she is improving on. She should be included in trying out new things to assist in enhancing useful competition skills that she possesses. It is, therefore, necessary that a program that involves being adopted to help her recover from the uncertainty about her capabilities.

Materials/Equipment to be changed.
Kim has suffered from paraplegia and has ended up gaining 30 pounds under her weight. It, therefore, means that her physical ability has to be improved to strengthen her legs, torso and the pelvic organs. Reducing weight has to involve workouts to help in keeping her fit. One of the equipment that should be introduced is the cardio equipment. This helps in enhancing high-intensity workout which in turn does not only strengthen one but also reducing the weight loss.
Introduction of the high-tech solution materials is also essential in improving Kim’s inclusion in the recreational therapy. Some of these materials that can be used include Jawbone or the Fitbit. They both help a participant in tracking the figures which are involved in the weight loss. They play a significant role in fitness tracking as well (Freeman, 15). Introducing these materials will help Kim to try out other things and also compete with other participants who are undergoing the same process. Due to the competitive environment created, Kim’s recovery is likely to improve at a faster rate.
Aspects of the activity to be changed
There are two aspects of the activity that should be changed to help Kim. They include the physical aspects and the emotional considerations. Kim loves to be involved in the competitive physical activities, and therefore she needs more participants during the therapy to improve her state and inclusion. Reducing the number of participants to help her compete with them effectively is one of the steps that will improve her condition. The workout process should have different requirements to enable the attainment of the desired goals. For Kim’s case, making the workout to be less complicated and encouraging competition between them is an excellent move to help in achieving the desired goal.
Emotional considerations should also be changed to avoid provocation of Kim’s emotions. It is necessary to understand that Kim is uncertain about her capabilities and therefore she needs to be encouraged that she can still regain her abilities. The best way of enhancing this process is by inserting time for processing to allow her to understand the strides she is making towards her recovery (Freeman, 17). It also helps in boosting her emotions and work hard towards achieving the desired goal of returning to the competitive recycling.
Environment changes
One crucial requirement for an environmental modification is to allow the participant to pursue a meaningful recreation actively. In Kim’s case, the participant’s area needs to be changed. The size of the field needs to be increased to allow competition between Kim and other participants who are involved in the recreational therapy. As for the exercise, Kim should be encouraged to have her yoga mat unrolled in her bedroom as a reminder to spend her time of the day balancing and strengthening. Having such an environment allows constant exercise thus leading to desired weight loss.
The boundary lines also need to be manipulated to accommodate all participants who are practicing and competing. Since Kim loves having the physical skills competition, the boundary lines should be manipulated to accommodate all of them. Making changes in the environment allows proper inclusion of all the participants to after that compete to achieve their desired goals (Smith, 3).

Alteration of participant
To increase Kim’s participation, it is necessary that other participants be altered to encourage their active participation in the exercise. There should be the provision of additional physical aids like bicycles to allow them to compete effectively with each other. They should also be taught necessary skills in enhancing their participation to enable them workout as a team. Different opportunities to try new things should be encouraged as this improves practice with the determination of knowing how they efficiently work. The participants who need weight loss should be paired together with Kim. This process is essential as it helps them to participate in their recreational activities actively and at the same time, work on ways that can help them regain their initial weight.
What needs to be changed on how the participants are taught?
Kim’s fitness needs are encompassed in need to be stable after suffering from paraplegia and weight gain. Teaching her in various ways to improve her diet is another way in which can increase her inclusion. One of the best ways of teaching a participant who has suffered from paraplegia is through occupational training (Freeman 18). This helps in allowing her to learn new skills and at the same time regaining old ones. Kim, therefore, needs to be taught other alternative modalities like how to carry out massage to help in restoring the strength that might have been lost due to the paraplegia.
The participants in Kim’s group need to be taught various ways in which they can be in a position to reduce their weight even on their own. Recovery from paraplegia and weight gain needs participants to know how they can have different coping skills. These skills include carrying out exercises and at the same time keeping track on their fitness. All these mechanisms sometimes do not require therapist’s presence. It is, therefore, necessary that the participants be taught on how they can compete with each other effectively even when on their own (Smith, 3). They should also be trained on how to try different skills, e.g., cycling skills thus improving their motor abilities.
