The dominant characteristics include a good education, financial stability, spiritual, self-confident and reliable among others. Both men and women seem to be seeking partners who are earning more than they are. Despite coding the topic as ‘personal characteristics,’ it seems more inclined to financial issues more than any other. The findings from the research will assist in getting to know what interests African American men when looking for a marriage partner and why they prefer them.

Journal of Marriage and the Family, 77(5), 1202–1216. http://doi.org/10.1111/jomf.12209The non-marital relationships among the young Africa American adults were evaluated to determine their effect on their general perceptions about marriage. Cohabiting is the most dominant relationship. Some of those not in relationships considered marriage important to them while others had other determining factors such as not wanting to be committed to any relationship.

The findings reveal the actual face of the young adults and attitude towards marriage. Information from this article provides for my study on the preferred relationships by African American men who were not considering marriage an option.

The authors seek to find out the factors associated with outcomes of marriage among African Americans. With the high divorce cases, many separations were based on financial grounds and extra-marital affairs. Interracial marriages were more successful and stable. The article reveals the most influential determinants of divorces. I will use this findings to look into why men will move to a second marriage while most women never remarry.

This scholar reviews how wealth is dividing marriages. Financial stability of each of the spouses acts as a determinant with ownership of assets raising disagreements more than any other financial issue. It looks deeply into the wealth issues in family units. One of the reasons I found for low marriage rates amongst male African Americans is the economic status that will derive much information from this article.

Financial stability, individual development, and preference for gay/lesbian relationships were among the main factors. Increased cohabiting was also associated with singlehood. This information focuses on the current trends influencing marriage decisions that are part of my study.

The article looks at the attitude of African American men towards marriage in a wide scope providing insight on why they behave the way they do. The effect of harsh parenting is one of the factors believed to negatively contribute to developing attitudes. This will assist me in looking at other factors other than personal decisions that affect decisions of marriage.

This survey was meant to find out the intimate relationships and commitment behavior of African American men were changing. Majority of the men did not want commitment and opted for more than one relationship. Social, economic disadvantage and harsh unsupportive parenting affected them with a high percentage preferring white women to their fellow black women. This information forms the basis of my study on why African American men view marriage.

The book observes the rate at which Hispanic and Asian women intermarry with men from other races while black women choose to stay single. It is evident that black men often marry other races and blamed for the high population of unmarried black women. I will be looking at why these trends are increasingly becoming common.

There have been increasing trends in single parenthood, increasing cohabiting, gay/lesbian marriages and interracial marriages. My work will be looking deeply into such trends and how they are influencing decisions on marriage.

The article discusses interracial marriages in a wide scope pointing out several factors influencing the marriages. Education is a key determinant where both spouses have the same level of education. It is one of my major areas of study on how the level of education affects decisions related to marriage.
