Metacognition is a term that is used in reference to the innate capacity for reflection of personal thoughts and behaviors. Precisely, it is a reference to the processes involved in planning, monitoring and the assessing of one’s performance and understanding (Schneider, 116). As such, it is inclusive of the critical cognition of personal thinking and learning as well as evaluating critically oneself as a learner and a thinker. Metacognition skills are an essential set of competencies necessary for active learning, reflective judgment, decision-making and eventually problem-solving. The development of these skills is a vital component in the making of adolescents that are better at critical thinking, decision making and solving problems efficiently (Schneider, 119).
The adolescent age is a period in life associated with developmental changes as an individual edge more and more towards enhanced self-awareness and self-concept (Schneider, 118). This is an age that also sees the persons seek forms of independence in relation to their choices. As such, there are those that edge towards substance abuse, some become acutely aware of their flaws that their esteem drops while there are those whose confidence soars. Therefore, a look at this age indicates there is fundamentally growth of metacognitive skills or their need of. Generally, every decision requires some form of confidence. An assessment of personal confidence is a factor that dictates how much they would and are willing to, ideally, risk.

Again, good decisions are driven by information (Schneider, 118). For the adolescent, metacognition is vital as it is the driving force for appropriate life choices. The knowledge they have apparently acquired in their previous years plays metacognitive purposes if it is used for the strategic realization of goals. Their tendency towards pairing off is an aspect that is chiefly founded on metacognitive knowledge about other persons. Such enables them to understand both intra-individual and inter-individual differences thus opening up desires for a basic company. Psychological studies have shown that metacognitive ability tends to increase with age as adolescents grow (Schneider, 116). Additionally, self-evaluation amongst the adolescent age group increases as can be observed in spatial, proportional and reasoning tasks. In this regard, it is worth noting that metacognition is vital for an enhanced “feeling of knowing” of oneself. This is a definitive element in the growth and development of an adolescent.
