Mrs. Jones Case Study
The patient has difficulty performing most of her Activities of Daily Living (ADL) after undergoing a lumbar strain surgery. Some of these ADLs include
Dressing
Toileting
Showering
Cleaning laundry and any other type of washing
Walking
Waking up from sleep
Carrying Heavy Loads
Standing for a long time
Running, jogging, bending or climbing stairs
I will advise the patient to do the following:
Stretch before engaging in any strenuous activity to relax the muscles and allow mobility.
Avoid uncomfortable heights because it poses a higher risk such as tripping.
Use a chair which is comfortable and fitted with lumbar support to ensure that the lower back is not strained.
Avoid wearing high heeled shoes but instead, wear comfortable and low-heeled shoes.
Sleep from one side and precisely on a firm surface
Avoid lifting heavy objects which may place more pressure on the lower back.
Maintain a nutritious and healthy diet at all times.
Avoid smoking because it will affect medication.
I will use the remedial approach to help the patient reduce pain, and I will employ the following strategies:
Recommend her to seek medication, e.g., using pain adjuvants or analgesics to relieve pain.
Recommend her to seek massaging services to manipulate and mobilize the spine.
Recommend her to use traction to exercise the back muscles to bring them to the right alignment.
