I attended the Winter Concert at Immanuel Baptist Church on 4th December 2016 from 7 pm to 9 pm. The main performers for the event were Norman Singers and they performed a number of Christmas carols. These were namely; We need a little Christmas by Jerry Herman, Caroling Caroling by Wihla Hutson, O magnum mysterium by Morten Lauridsen, Candlelight Carol by John Rutter and Peace Peace by Rick and Sylvia Powell. The paper shall provide a review of the concert with the aim of showing the actions that were taken by presenters to attract the attention of the audience and as well, to send across the messages that were contained in the songs clearly.
The group was made up of various musicians who played part in making the concert a great success. The singers who were in the bass group included; Chuck Bacon, Roger Benham, Eric Casperson, Brandt Cassidy, Thomas Henderson, Matthew Johnson, Michael Kramer, Ted Mansell, Charles Palm and David Warren. The tenor group included; Hunter Birkhead, Mark Mitchell, Phil Sipe, Tim Rodkey, James Snyder, Michael Yeager and David Zittel.
The musicians applied a conjunct melody on most of the songs presented in that various intervals were attained at different times in a bid to make the songs more entertaining and as well, to help pass across the message contained in them appropriately. A meter rhythm was also achieved in the songs and they followed a pattern that would most easily identify with the theme of the event.
Wait! Night at the Winter and St. Michael’s Episcopal Church Concerts paper is just an example!
Most of the songs were also lulling in their form and would, therefore, bring about a soothing feeling to the audience. The voices of the singers attained an element of unison that was quite harmonious. The singers were also quite smooth, which made it quite easy to listen to the songs that they presented.
I also had the chance to attend a classical concert at the St. Michael’s Episcopal Church on January 20, 2016 from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm. The main performers were the Norman Community Choral Society. The musicians played many songs including; “A girl’s Garden”, “Stopping by the woods”, and “Choose something like a star”, all by Randall Thompson. Anna Allen, Mary Anderson and Debra Baggett among others formed part of the soprano group. The alto group comprises of Cynthia Baker, Gail Barnes and Beth Brown among others. The director for the concert was Stephania Abell who played a huge role in making the necessary preparations and ensuring that it would turn out to be a success.
The artists were so engrossed in their performance and eluded the theme of happiness in the pieces that they presented. The melody attained in the songs was disjuncted in that the songs had wide intervals. The rhythm attained was that of tempo and the songs were quite faster than usual. The songs were also classical in form, shown by the strong vocals applied. The texture of the songs was also quite smooth, thereby, being quite enjoyable to the audience. I was quite elated to attend the concerts as I had the opportunity to have fun listening to some of the best voices that I have ever come across for a long period. I would, fully recommend one to attend a concert performed by the singers featured in the concerts that I attended.
